When climbing hills, fit the chains to the rear wheels because due to gravity 70% of the whole vehicle weight is transferred to the rear. With the additional grip of the chains, you will keep mobile and steady. If you're going downhill, fit the chains to the front wheels, but if you're covering all conditions then chain-up all four wheels. Protection of the environment is paramount and driven intelligently, a chain-equipped vehicle will cause less track damage than one without chains.
